2010 Chairman's Circle Reception for the San Diego Council on Literacy

The 17th Annual Chairman’s Circle Reception for the San Diego Council on Literacy took place for the first time at National University in La Jolla on December 8th, 2010. The Council’s CEO Jose Cruz had this to say. “After 17 years of presenting The Chairman’s Circle Reception at the Copley Library in La Jolla, our supporters, with much grace, joined us at the new venue at National University, and came to us, again, with the spiritedness and generosity they have always shown for greater literacy in our community.”

Among those generous sorts supporting ‘learner reading’ for all ages were Robin Parsky, Honorary Chair David C. Copley, Colette and Ivor Royston, Jay Hill (he’s the Executive Director of the San Diego Public Library Foundation), and Judith Harris and Dr. Robert Singer.

Dr. Singer had these remarks. “The Council of Literacy holiday event is always inspirational, listening to someone who has benefited by the program and learning as an adult to read. Just think how different your life would be and the opportunities that you would not have available if you could not read. There are many in our community who have never learned to read, even after having gone through many years of school. The San Diego Council on Literacy provides a safe environment that is not judgmental to assist those individuals. To hear the difficulties of someone who could not read and then see their increasing confidence and self worth from being helped to eventually learn to read and what they do in giving back to the community is always an emotional experience."

More supporters there were Chairman's Circle Chair Dr. Jerry C. Lee, Lynelle and William D. Lynch, Mel Katz and Jay Hill of the San Diego Public Library Foundation, Drew Schlossberg, Nancy Rohland-Heinrich (she's Chair of the San Diego Council on Literacy and Vice Chancellor, Pre-College Programs at the National University System), and the U-T Leadership Awardee for Literacy, Broadway San Diego's Joe Kobryner, who is the Vice-President of The Nederlander Group.  He is actually also referred to as' Mr. Broadway San Diego.'

The Learner Speaker for 2010 was Johanna Trevino. She spoke inspiringly about learning to read. Demonstrating tenacity and a way with words, she captivated the reception crowd.

Among those supporting but not able to be present were Audrey Geisel of the Dr. Seuss Fund, Darlene Shiley, Gerry Parsky, Karin Winner, United Way of San Diego, Jeanne Jones and Don Breitenberg, and Valerie and Harry Cooper.

"This event is always a memorable holiday event for the supporters of literacy in the community. National University System was pleased to be able to host the event and have an opportunity to recognize our supporters" said Nancy Rohland-Heinrich.

Longtime literacy supporter Mel Katz of Manpower summed it up. ”This annual holiday celebration was a very inspirational and moving event.  1 out of every 4 people in San Diego read below the 6th grade level and it is great to see how the Council on Literacy and its partners make a difference in their lives.’
