2006 GLOBE GALA
CELEBRATES EXCITING MUSICAL PLAY:
HERSHEY FELDER’S GEORGE GERSHWIN ALONE
ON SEPTEMBER 16
San Diego – The Tony Award®-winning
Old Globe hosts its 22nd annual Gala on Saturday, September 16,
in celebration of its Season 2006/2007 opener: Hershey Felder’s
George Gershwin Alone. This exciting event is co-chaired by Valerie
Cooper, Jake Figi, Robert Gleason, and Carolyn Yorston and is
the Globe’s largest annual fund-raiser, celebrating the
achievements of the year as well as supporting the institution’s
education programs.
The Gala evening begins with cocktails,
abundant hors d’oeuvres and a silent auction in Balboa Park’s
Alcazar Garden at 5:30pm. At 7:30pm, the curtain rises on a special
preview performance of George Gershwin Alone, written and performed
by Hershey Felder and directed by Joel Zwick. Following the performance,
dinner and dancing will commence on the Globe’s Copley Plaza,
featuring music by the 10-piece Innovation Dance Band. Tickets
to this exciting event start at $600; underwriting opportunities
begin at $2,000. Gala Underwriters are invited to an exclusive
party in August at the home of author Anne Rice, where they will
enjoy a private concert by Hershey Felder. For more information,
please contact the Events Manager Eileen Prisby at (619) 231-1941,
x2303 or via email at Events@TheOldGlobe.org.
A celebrated work about the legendary American
composer, George Gershwin Alone is a delightful “play with
music” by actor, playwright and Steinway concert artist
Hershey Felder. The show incorporates the Gershwins' best-known
songs, from The Man I Love and Someone to Watch Over Me, through
passages and songs from An American in Paris and Porgy and Bess,
to a complete performance of Rhapsody in Blue. The first popular
composer to use jazz as the foremost musical element in the serious
concert hall, Gershwin absorbed the musical styles, rhythms and
sophistication of the American spirit and created a musical language
that made its mark on both classical and popular music throughout
the world. Hershey Felder brings to life the spirit and talent
of the legendary composer and pianist, leading audiences through
the fascinating rhythms of Gershwin’s legendary songbook,
while telling the tale of his tragically short life.
