Surfboards Gets Inked for Great Cause
La Jolla, California – Steve Walden
Surfboards and the artists of the TLC channel television series
"Miami Ink" have partnered to create a one-of-a-kind
tattooed surfboard to be auctioned at the UCSD Cancer Center Luau
& Longboard Invitational.
"Miami Ink's" Ami James and Tim
Hendricks hand painted a 9-foot Walden Magic model surfboard to
be auctioned off at the Cancer Center event on Sunday, August
20. The Luau & Longboard Invitational includes a surf contest
featuring some of the sport’s legendary surfers as well
as a post-competition luau. The event brings together the biggest
names in surfing and San Diego’s business community in an
effort to raise money for cancer research.
The TLC channel documented the meeting
between Steve Walden and the Miami Ink crew, as well as the board
painting process. TLC will film at the Luau & Longboard event
as the board is auctioned off. The “Miami Ink” program
is anticipated to air on TLC in September.
Walden is hoping that the “Tattoo'd”
surfboard will raise more money than Walden's 2005 donation of
a Lance Armstrong LIVESTRONG surfboard signed by Lance himself.
The Armstrong board sold for $27,500, the most ever paid for a
new surfboard.
For more information about tickets and
event activities, contact the Moores UCSD Cancer Center at (858)

About the Moores UCSD Cancer Center
Founded in 1979, UCSD Cancer Center was
recently renamed the Rebecca and John Moores UCSD Cancer Center
in honor of the Moores’ leadership gift to the Center. The
Center is one of just 39 in the United States to hold a National
Cancer Institute (NCI) designation as a Comprehensive Cancer Center.
As such, it ranks among the top centers in the nation conducting
basic and clinical cancer research, providing advanced patient
care and serving the community through outreach and education
programs. The center’s mission is to translate promising
scientific discoveries into new and better options for the prevention,
diagnosis and treatment of cancer, and the amelioration of pain.
