Sundts'
Polynesian Paradise at Sunset Gathers Big
Support for Kids' Futures
On a recent Friday
evening, Kathliene (divine in a Norma Kamali
cutout one-piece) and Jon Sundt welcomed supporters
to their annual foundation fundraiser. This
year it was held at the Birch Aquarium at
the Scripps Institution. The Sundt Memorial
Foundation was started in 1994 by Jon in memory
of his 2 brothers, Eric and Steven. They passed
on due to the effects of drugs. The Sundt
Memorial Foundation's mission is to change
"the hearts and minds of today's youth".
Via inspiring educational DVD's, with sports
and celebrity sound bites, the message is
clear. Make the right choice and live a drug
free, healthy life. The DVD's are titled Natural
High and Natural High II - Riding the Drug-Free
Wave. The DVD's are distributed nationwide
to schools. Fundraising efforts like this
one help to get the message out.
For this fundraising
evening, guests were encouraged to wear Island-chic,
sip Tahitian fruit drinks, taste Polynesian
inspired cuisine by Culinary Concepts' Chef
Manfred Gersabek, enjoy Polynesian live music
and dancing, and bid on auction items. All
of this took place during a picture perfect
sunset at the Birch Aquarium, with the Scripps
Pier and beautiful coastline as backdrop.
Guests there enjoying
the fun and supporting the cause included
Francois Ferre, Debbie Beacham of Beacham
Construction and Debbie's brother-in-law Frank
Beacham, Betsy and Greg Mitchell - they are
the proud parents of 2 opera trained singers
in their family, Rory Rupert, Leticia Ramirez,
Kathy and Dr. Joe Andrews and Doctor John
Andrews. Yes these 2 doctors are not only
brothers but twins! Also there were Ed Spizel,
the Bruce Steel's, and Clint Preisendorfer.
Clint was a top 2005 draft pick for the New
York Yankees.
One long devotee of
the event had pressing matters to attend to,
and so missed this year's event. David Kay
of WordSmart was getting married, very happily
in fact to concert pianist Kyungshil Ji. The
newlyweds will be at this event next year
though.
As guests ate incredible
edibles including coconut fried shrimp, the
live auction fired up and the wallets opened
up big… $75,000 plus big! Auctioneer
Robert Glee enticed the bidding skyward!
Drs. Marjorie and Morton
Shaevitz bought a great travel/auction item.
They will be enjoying a trip to Napa Valley,
an exclusive PlumpJack Estates tour, a signed
PlumpJack Reserve bottle and more. Dr. Stephen
Lawrence won a week at the Kauai Coast Resort,
a Rainbow Kayak tour and more. Suntan included!
A Tony Hawk signed skateboard went to Kelly
Lake. A very cool 6' Rusty Surfboard went
to Sheldon Englehorn. A private gourmet dinner
will be prepared for Katie Murphy and 9 of
her lucky invitees by renowned Chef Fabrice
Poigin. No driving involved. This will be
at Katie's home.
And something close
to a surfers' hearts was the "Home on
the Ranch" getaway. Holister Ranch that
is, in Santa Barbara. Dream waves, and very
private. Not only is the prize a weekend at
Kathliene and Jon Sundt's ranch at Holister,
not only is the transportation on a private
chartered jet…. but Jon Sundt himself
will be the attentive staff and chef (he used
to work at Chart House during his formative
days). Lucky winning bidders Lauren and Bob
Hasson might also get some savvy money investing
advice…. Jon's other day jobs are as
head of Sundt Development in real estate,
as head of Altegris Investments, a 1.3 billion
dollar managed futures and hedge fund company,
and, Jon is Founder and President of International
Traders Research Inc. ITR provides performance
information on alternative investment programs
worldwide. ITR is regularly quoted in The
Wall Street Journal, The Chicago Tribune and
other noted publications.
Worldwide too in importance
is the message the Sundt Memorial Foundation
sends…. The best wave to ride is drug
free!
