People
ask me how I got into show business and here is what I tell them,
It all began in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania where I was born. At
that time my father and uncles were involved in managing local
motion picture theatres. From there we all moved to Milwaukee,
Wisconsin where I grew up and graduated from Shorewood High School.
I then spent two years at The University of Colorado and graduated
from a small school in Wisconsin called Ripon College. I received
a B.A. in speech. Upon graduation I went to work for our family
candy concession business. We had offices in six cities in the
Midwest and we ran the popcorn and candy stands in over 1,000
movies and in drive-in theatres. About this time my three uncles
moved to Hollywood and went into the motion picture business.
They started working for Monogram Studios which
changed its name to Allied Artists. While at
Allied Artists they produced "Moby Dick"
with Gregory Peck and the original "Moulin
Rouge" with Jose Ferrer and
Zsa Zsa Gabor. At that point they realized they
didn't need a studio behind them and formed their own studio called
The Mirisch Corporation which went on to produce
72 motion pictures, won 24 Academy Awards including Three
Best Picture Awards. Those three films were "West
Side Story,""The
Apartment" and "In The Heat
of the Night." Other great films they produced
were "Some Like It Hot,"
"The Great Escape,""Hawaii,"
"The Magnificent Seven," "Fiddler
on The Roof" and "The Pink
Panther" films. During their early production
days I had the pleasure of working for United Artists
who distributed all of the Mirisch Company films.
This is where I got my first introduction in to show business
by being a publicity man for their films. I traveled all over
the United States and my first real introduction into the world
of show business.
