SCGA *Southern California Golf Association

La Jolla Youth Soccer & Japanese Youth - La Jolla Youth Soccer teamed up with some of the best soccer youth from Japan. Although they had never played together before, the Japanese children played well and worked the La Jolla girls and guys teams hard. Afterwards it was nothing but fun with a Cafe Design Catering supper on the Willis M. Allen soccer field. Click on the La Jolla & Japanese Soccer image to the right for a video clip coming soon.

TIGER GOLF AKA SCGA AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP AT LJCC. Tiger Woods played in this event and won in ’94. What is it you ask? It’s premiere amateur golf also known as the Southern California Golf Association Amateur Championships. This year’s 102nd tournament took place on the beautiful greens of La Jolla Country Club, thanks to the smooth organization of SCGA President Dirk Kingma and his inspiring golf partner, Kitty Kingma.

And the big win went to UCLA’s 19 year old John Merrick who scored 8 under par with 280 total to win by two strokes over teammate Travis Johnson. By the by, Brett Foulds of Escondido came in tie for third and Victor Zayas Jr., Larry Correa, Peter Booth, Chris Galseki, Michael Riley, Ed Cuff, Bryant Reyes, Michael Feuerstein, Peter Roberts, Joe Rathburn, Doug Higgins Donald O’Connor and Mike Lincoln all scored exceptionally well.

** The Jewel Ball **2001 Nights – The 55th Annual Jewel Ball delivered more that it’s exoctic theme, 2001 Nights. Bedouin magic and a lot of hard work by the Las Patronas ladies and super helper men transformed the pool area and the front tennis courts into royal tents of choreographed dancers, souks and bountiful feasts.

It wasn’t just a feast for the eyes. It was a feast for the beneficiaries as $300,000 plus funds were raised for this year’s chosen recipients. The major beneficiaries for 2001 are:

*The California Ballet Company who will receive funds for two new Harlequin dance floor coverings.

*The Canine Companions for Independence will receive special canine fencing and doors to ensure the safety and health of highly trained assistance dogs.

*The foundation of La Jolla High School will receive advanced 4 person lab stations for the innovative new 16 classroom Science and Technology Center.

*The Tony award winning Old Globe Theater will receive money for the purchase of a new ticketing and fund development system.

*The Scripps / Polster Breast Care Center will be funded for a state-of-the-art mammography viewing system.

*Second Chance, which offers a new start to the homeless via job readiness training, will receive an advanced telephone system enhancing system to enhance communications with clients and prospective employers.

*The Vision of Children Foundation, dedicated to the eradication of hereditary childhood blindness and vision disorders will receive 7 computers and a printer to build the information infrastructure to better serve families facing this situation.

*The Wellness Community of San Diego, which provides comprehensive psychological, emotional and educational support services for people affected by cancer, will receive communications and services with new equipment.

Dancing to The West Coast Orchestra of Beverly Hills and dinner by Behind the Scenes was only topped by the smiles of 800 plus elegantly clad guests having an exceptional time.

Princely kudos go to the (Las) Patronas Princesses. They are an exceptionally hardworking team and they include President Maryl Weightman, 2001 Jewel Ball Chairman Susan Oliver and Co-Chairs Debby Thomas Fishburn and Jackie Helm. **FCC & MAKE-A-WISH – The runway sizzled with talent at the 15th Annual “Golden Hangar” Fashion Awards” presented by FCC or Fashion Careers of California College. The event featured special fashion awards to San Diegans and San Diego fashion businesses. Local personalities, local models and special Make-A-Wish models spiced up the festivities with FCC student designs.

Make-A-Wish models were paired with local personalities and celebrities. The evening’s honorees were Janet Sutter of the Copley News Service who was awarded the lifetime achievement award. Other awards went to Brady’s for San Diego Retailer of the Year, Susan Lake for her extraordinary Zanlake Headwear was awarded San Diego Accessory Designer of the Year, Apparel Suppliers of California was awarded San Diego Manufacturer of the Year (which was presented by www.margomargo.tv web girl and radio girl on the Roger Hedgecock Show Margo Schwab) Brigitte Palmer For Brigitte Couture Swimwear was awarded San Diego Fashion Designer of the Year, Hang Ten was awarded San Diego Progressive Retailer of the Year, Let’s Go was awarded San Diego Vintage Boutique of the Year and Diane Powers of Bazaar Del Mundo was awarded the Special Fashion Award.

Guests included handsome Burl Stiff of the Union-Tribune, Barbara ZoBell, Scott Johnston, model Jessica Johnson with her mother Mary Johnson and a lot of proud parents and friends.

The event was beautifully coordinated by FCC President and event chair Pat O’Connor and 2000 Golden Hanger Lifetime Achievement Award Winner, Peggy Matthews. Jim Crawford of Jim Crawford Productions was the fashion show producer and choreographer and boundlessly energetic and fun Tanya McAnear was the show’s Fab Coordinator.

Sponsors of this year’s gala were Factory 2-U Stores, Charlotte Russe/Rampage (Yeah Sally Lawrence) and Cox Communications. The evening’s benefactor, The Make-A-Wish Foundation of San Diego will receive in excess of $25,000 helping make dreams come true for children with life threatening illnesses.

Pooches and Pet Owners gather for Humane Event at SAKS - SAKS Fifth Avenue in La Jolla gathered for a Pooch perfect evening of fine Monzu cuisine with martinis, lovely ladies with sharply suited gentleman, all amid a flurry of bejeweled models and some very well behaved canines of course.

Among the many there in support of the event’s raison d’etre were animal lovers Judith Harris and Dr. Robert Singer, Colette and Ivor Royston, jewelry designer to the stars and you, Katey Brunini, fab Kay Warriner of SAKS and Suzanne Koch of Rancho Santa Fe.

The event was chaired by Judith Harris and the very busy Dave Copley. Short and precise speeches about the San Diego Humane Society cut to the chase, funds are needed now to preserve sanctuaries for animals. To become involved, please contact the San Diego Humane Society.

Fun on the 4th of July with Jill & Jerry Ives - Lucky guests were invited to the “Umpteenth 4th of July Party by Jill & Jerry Ives & Their Terrific sons to the Martin Johnson House perched high up on the cliffs at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography.

Guests played horseshoes, skateboarded, picnicked and enjoyed cool tunes by Spaceman Spiff who regularly play at Moondoggies in Pacific Beach. The evening capped off with fireworks and good cheer not to mention a few beers.

Hollywood at the Playhouse Puts Stars Center Stage - La Jolla Playhouse’s fundraising and driven Center Stage Club held their third annual Hollywood at the Playhouse event, again at the lovely cliffside home of Mary-K and Ross Gilbert.

Show business legends included Joe Harper, yes the Joe Harper of the Del Mar Race Track, Dick Enberg, Dick Van Patten, Ed Friendly and Burt Bacharach. Tim Conway could not make it this year. The stars exchanged anecdotes and ribbed each other profusely, much to the amusement of an appreciative crowd.

Among the attentive crowd were Berneice and Dempsey Copeland, Toni Bloomberg, sweetie Cynthia Bolker, Melinda Bennett, Dianne York Goldman of the famous Spa Medica, Patti and Coop Cooprider, Martha Dennis, Ruby Eichler of Gentleman’s Quarter, Reinette Levine, Arthur Lipper, Gayle Magnuson, Camille and Glenn Khoury, Eloisa Haudenschild, Cathryn Ramirez of Tiffany’s and Betsy Van Patten with her sons.
