Tips to recognize Domestic Violence & What you can do

1 - embarass you with put-downs and bad names

2 - look at you or act in ways that scare you

3 - control what you do.... how you dress, what you say, who you see, where you go

4 - interfere with you seeing family and/or friends

5 - interfere with your ability to work

6 - interfere with your independence financially

7 - make all the decisions...... has to control everything

8 - tell you you are bad at anything or everything

9 - threaten to take your children away

10 - threaten your pet's life

11 - act like the abuse is no big deal, say it is your fault or deny the abuse

12 - destroy your property

13 - intimidate you with guns, knives or other weapons

14 - shove you, slap you, rape you or hit you

15 - force you to drop charges

16 - threaten to commit suicide

17 - threaten to kill you

CCS is also good resource to get a free (excepting filing fee)

temporary restraining order or TRO

A TRO is an official written court ordered restraint to keep the violent person

away from you ... it also typically restrains the person from harrassing

& threatening you by phone or any other means

.... it is only paper though so be prepared.... abusers typically come after their victim

soon after a restraining order is recorded. Protect yourself... there are safehouses

Helpful Tips

Call 911 in emergencies!

1 - Keep a copy of important papers, telephone numbers and medical records with you

and place a copy with a trusted friend

2 - Keep a brief diary of incidents, TRO violations, witnesses, photos

3 - Stay in contact with the Police and your City Attorney's Office if you have any problems or questions

4 - Learn about the cycle of abuse.....understand the traps and break the cycle

5 - Get counseling.

6 - Remember abuse is not your fault
