'Moon Over Morocco' La Jolla Playhouse Gala

"The party was beautiful and fun with lots of enthusiastic patrons demonstrating their enduring support for the Playhouse. The 'Three J's would like to thank all those who made this evening such a successful event." - Sheri Jamieson

That's the three J Co-Chairs, Jeanne Jones, Sheri Jamieson, and Debby Jacobs. And they were worth a lot of camels and gold for their fundraising talents. The La Jolla Playhouse's theme was 'Moon Over Morocco' for the October 24th, 2008 event. And quite a few guests came dressed to the exotic theme.

There were big stone necklaces, Moroccan inspired caftans, and a number of fez's. And there was Clyde the Camel too. Clyde, tassels and all, drew quite a few of the beautiful sorts to pose by him.... smart man, I mean camel!

Event Co-Chairs Jeanne Jones, Debby Jacobs, and Sheri Jamieson with their Moroccan friend, Clyde the Camel

Colette Carson Royston wore a beautiful sequined Oscar de la Renta, Valerie Cooper wore an Alexander McQueen dress clinched at the waist with a stone studded waist band, Tanya Brandes chose a strapless gown that shimmered, Debby Jacobs wore a short dress by Colette Dinnigan, Sheryl White chose a short beaded Oscar de La Renta, and Sheri Jamieson wore textile rich velvet designs by Zandra Rhodes. But it was Sheri's unique necklace by Lisa Sotilis that really got the attention. Antique scarabs and all.

And there were a number of other eye catching necklaces.

Jeanne Jones wore a silk djellaba. It went well with her big stone beaded necklace. Perhaps picked out by her granddaughter Riley on their trip to Egypt earlier this year.

And there were more 'in theme' guests there. The Playhouse's Mary Ann Tacho wore a caftan she picked up in Cairo, Hermeen Scharaga wore a beautiful serpentine collier of pearls and emeralds, and Karen Cohn chose a short dress by Oscar de la Renta. The dress was all of royal throne peacock colors.

The evening started with a cocktail reception, and posing with Clyde, before guests continued to the 'tented' dinner. Jim Lennox and his team at Pacific Events transformed the Potiker Theatre into a fabulously fabric draped tent. Rich colors of gold and ruby red prevailed.

The Wolfgang Puck Catering provided the Moroccan inspired menu. Roasted baby beets with frisee, pomegranate seeds, Roquefort Cheese, walnuts, and apples were drizzled with Balsamic. The main entree of lamb was served with carrot cumin puree and oven roasted saffron tomato with a Picholine Olive sauce.

Dinner got lively when the live auction started. Tempting items got bid up big. A Bon Jovi Guitar, a dinner with Joan and Irwin Jacobs, a Jersey Boys (it all started at the Playhouse) walk on part, dinner at Sheri and Stuart Jamieson's home with Oceanaire's Chef Malarky preparing dinner, and a walk on role for Xanadu.

That's the Xanadu that is now at the La Jolla Playhouse through December 31st.... But with the talents of Christopher Ashley directing, choreography by Dan Knechtges, music and lyric by John Farrar and Jeff Lynne, all based on the book by Douglas Carter Beane, no doubt, Xanadu will be extended. A frequent occurrence of La Jolla Playhouse productions!

For this special evening, acclaimed actress Kerry Butler enthralled guests with her ethereal performance of Clio/Kira in Xanadu. Kerry is after all a 2008 Tony Award Nominated Best Actress in a Musical..... poetically referred by reviewers coast to coast as a dreamy phenom on rollerskates.

A tough act to follow but guests did. With desserts at the 'bazaar,' and fun dancing, sans rollerskates to Zowie Bowie.

Jeanne Jones concluded "when Debby, Sheri and I first started fantasizing about our party, it was exactly what we had Friday night. The Gala was like a dream come true!"

Please enjoy the photos.

The Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego (MCASD) announced that the Getty Foundation has awarded the Museum a $225,000 grant to support research and planning for the forthcoming exhibition Phenomenal: California Light and Space. The project is one of 15 Getty Foundation grants announced October 29, totaling nearly $2.8 million. Previous grants to the project bring the Getty's investment to $5.5 million, thus launching the largest collaborative project undertaken by museums in the region. This series of concurrent exhibitions throughout Southern California is called Pacific Standard Time: Art in L.A. 1945-1980.

The exhibition and catalogue Phenomenal: California Light and Space will be the most significant in MCASD's history, opening Fall 2011 and taking place in the museum's multiple venues. "MCASD is extremely grateful for the Getty Foundation's support and giving us this opportunity to collaborate with other Southern California museums on such a large scale. We are especially pleased to be further exploring the subject of Light and Space, as these artists have been of particular interest to this museum since the 1960s," said Dr. Hugh M. Davies, The David C. Copley Director of MCASD.
