Hearts
& Scholars Dinner
March 1st, 2006
by the Social Diary Columnist & Photographer Margo Schwab
One
recent February evening brought together a collection of deserving,
diligent, and driven UCSD scholarship students with their sponsors
for the 'Hearts & Scholars Dinner.' The location,
The Faculty Club at UCSD. The hosts, UCSD Chancellor, University
of California, San Diego, Marye Anne Fox, and
the UCSD Undergraduate Scholarship Council.
Cocktail
hour served up more than appetizers and libations. It was a chance
for student scholars to meet and mingle with generous sponsors
including Patricia and George Karetas, Sook and Ron Hansen,
Doris Howell, Pam and Martin Wygod of the Rose Foundation,
Kay and Don Stone, Darcy and Bob Bingham and Julia Brown
of Amylin. More steadfast supporters of UCSD student
scholarships include Joan and Irwin Jacobs, Ellen Revelle,
Audrey Geisel and The Seuss Foundation, Michael L. Marx
and Donald K. Marshall, Diana C. Miles, Paul Montrone of Fisher
Scientific International, Brian M. Walsh, Northrop Grumman, Charles
Robins, ARCS, and Victoria and Thomas P. Haggin.
It was also a chance to meet legends like Herb York,
the first UCSD Chancellor. Herb is a
world famous nuclear physicist who among many projects, served
as a science advisor to President Eisenhower and President Carter,
worked on the Manhattan Project and worked with Robert Oppenheimer
on developing the atom bomb. The list of Herb's accomplishments
goes on and on, but UCSD stays close to his heart. Herb and his
wife Sybil continue their involvement with UCSD
by sponsoring scholarships.
Deserving students receiving scholarships are many. They include
Josanda Jinnette, Robert Ikeda, Jin Young Chong, Edward
Bo-Hi Chuong, Devon Del Rio, Cehsea Dao, Barry Crodero, Susana
Coronilla, Jack Yacoo, Patrick Johnson, Vishnu Vyas, Jennifer
Wan, Alan Wong, Ming Wai Leung, Susan Lee, Steven LaFontaine,
and Joshua Kellison. There were many
more there too, all synapsing with intelligence, youth, and charm.
After
a delicious dinner, Julia Brown, Executive VP
for Amylin Pharmaceuticals and Chair of the UCSD Undergraduate
Scholarship Council, UCSD Chancellor Marye Anne Fox and
Dr. Joseph Watson, the UCSD Vice Chancellor Student
Affairs, opened with poignant remarks regarding the importance
of scholarships and donations.
They
were followed by 4 scholar panelists who each gave insight as
to how scholarships made a difference in their education paths
and lives. The scholar panelists were: Daniel Hendrey,
the Amylin Chancellors Research Scholarship, Wenting Shih,
the Howell Research Scholarship, Joshua Kellison,
the Kevin T. Hart Memorial Scholarship, and Anjanette
Urdanivia, the Darcy & Bob Bingham Scholarship. It
was clear that each have followed a truer path to their education
goals because of their scholarships. Anjanette is ready to change
the world now for the better, just as scholarships have changed
each of the recipients' lives.
