'Mining for a Cure' & Goin' for Gold at the Sanford-Burnham Gala More Social Diary Event Coverage ....HOME
The Western themed Sanford-Burnham Gala was 'Goin' for Gold, and ‘Mining For A Cure’ October 15th, 2011 at the Wyland Center at the Del Mar Fairgrounds. And find gold they did to the tune of $1.7 million. All to support the Sanford-Burnham’s groundbreaking research in cancer, diabetes, obesity, neuroscience, inflammatory diseases, rare diseases, nanomedicine, drug discovery, and more. Guests ‘mosey-ed on down’ dressed in gold, glamour, boots and denim for a fun filled evening. The ‘Mining For A Cure’ town featured a saloon, ‘grub’ stations with cooking by Premier Event Catering, and a slew of tables for later, fancy dining. Event Chairs Jeanne and Gary Herberger Among the many there were golden gal Debbie Turner and Conrad Prebys, Robin and Hank Nordhoff, Linda Chester and Kenneth Rind, Jackie and Patrick Carew, Roberta and Malin Burnham (yes the Burnham part of Sanford-Burnham is named after him for his huge generosity), and UCSD Chancellor Marye Anne Fox and James Whitesell. More there included Jeri and Richard Rovsek, the designer Jordan (in a beautiful Jordan) and David Masterjohn, Jane and Ed Gillenwaters, Jan and Christopher Moorad, Mindy and Nathan Fletcher, Marleigh and Alan Gleicher, Honorary Chairs Jeanne Jones and Don Breitenberg, Lola and Walter Green, Pauline Foster, Karen and Stuart Tanz, Karen and Warren Kessler, Sheila (dressed in a beautiful Jordan), and Jeffrey Lipinsky, Silvana and Alberto Michan, Gretchen and William Mobley, Caroline and Nico Nierenberg, Renee Roth, Denny Sanford (he’s the Sanford of Sanford-Burnham) and Lucia Silveira, Molly Thornton, and Mary Walshok. Also there were Event Chairs Jeanne and Gary Herberger, Sanford-Burnham CEO John Reed, M.C. Ph.D. and his wife Muffy Walker, and Honorary Chairs Pam and Marty Wygod. Guests entered the ‘mining town’ through a mine shaft, past several ‘outlaw’ sorts, ‘saloon gals,’ and some town songs sung by Eve Selis. Highlights of the live auction included John Reed raising his paddle for the fund-a-need portion with a $100,000 donation. There were also two very, very coveted, hard to get, Napa Valley French Laundry dinners. They went for $20,000 each! Life Technologies was one of the generous sponsors at $75,000 too. Sanford-Burnham, with operations in La Jolla and Florida, is one of the fastest-growing research institutes in the country. Ranked number 2 nationally for producing the most patents per received grants, the Sanford-Burnham utilizes a unique, collaborative approach to medical research that has established major inroads for research in cancer, stem cell, diabetes, and much more.
