Art Alive 2011 Blooms Beautifully
Thursday April 28th, 2011, the kickoff Gala for Art Alive was held at the San Diego Museum of Art. Since its founding by Adrienne Green and Museum Trustee Nancy Bildsoe in 1982, this annual event has drawn thousands of viewers for a 4 day event featuring floral interpretations of SDMA art, floral lectures, and of course this gala party. And a party it was. Among the guests there were Lynda and Richard Kerr, the designer Jordan (of Animal Fashions by Jordan) with David Masterjohn, Emma and Leo Zuckerman, Pam and Jerry Cesak (Pam wore a terrific dress from Rome, Italy detailed with flowers enclosed in the hem), Tom Gildred, Katy Dessent, Bea and Bob Epsten, and Event Signature Sponsor Audrey Geisel of the Dr. Seuss Fund / San Diego Foundation. Audrey was accompanied by her beau Alex Butterfield. Event Chair Anne Otterson with SDMA's Roxana Velasquez , Tom Gildred and Katy Dessent The exquisite floral interpretations exacted oohs and aaahs. René van Rems, world-renowned floral designer, designed the magnificent tower of flowers in the Sally and John Thornton rotunda. This rotunda was designed by Robert Thiele and has proved a wonderful backdrop for theme enhancements for events like Art Alive. More floral artists there were Kathy Wright, of Kathy Wright and Co., and trend maestro Carlos Franco of Green Fresh Florals More supporting the festivities included Salem Ciuffa in a fabulous pink coral Herve Leger, Valerie and Harry Cooper, Miriam and Peter Krippl, Sharon and Joel Labovitz, Mary and and Arnold Ginnow, Sue and Charles Edwards, Leonard Simpson in a colorful jacket by DAK, Eloisa and Chris Haudenschild, Rana Sampson, Doreen and Myron Schonbrun, Dowling & Yahnke, LLC, Maurice Kawashima, and Sarah B. Marsh Rebelo and John Rebelo. Delicious food for the gala party was provided by Giuseppe's Fine Catering, The Marine Room, Tapenade, Pamplemousse Grille and more. The event production was by the one and only Jim Lennox of Pacific Events. Be advised strictly no downloading, publishing, broadcasting, printing, or copying of photos or content. MUSEUM OF CONTEMPORARY ART OFFERS FREE ADMISSION YEAR-ROUND TO MILITARY PERSONNEL AND THEIR FAMILIES San Diego, CA-With more than 300,000 military personnel and family members living in San Diego County, the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego is committing to serving families of service men and women by offering them free year-round admission. "Our community has thousands of military families, and this is just one way our institution can thank them for all they do," said Davies. "Art should be accessible. We want to provide a place where these families can connect with the art and spend quality time together, at no cost to them." MCASD has supported the military in many ways. Last year, the Museum was among the many institutions offering free admission to military personnel and their families from Memorial Day through Labor Day as part of the Blue Star Museums initiative. This national program offers free museum admission to all active duty military personnel and their families during the summer months. Taking this initiative one step further, MCASD will now extend the offer of year-round admission. Davies said he hopes MCASD's act will encourage other museums to do the same. "The typical tour of duty doesn't last from June to August," he said. "These men and women are called to service throughout the year, and their counterparts are looking for opportunities to educate and entertain their children while they're gone. We hope we can help." Military families face a unique set of challenges. In addition to dealing with time spent apart and the social isolation that can accompany being stationed away from home, San Diego's cost of living is 32.5% above the national average. According to a survey by the Department of Defense for Reserve Affairs, more than 30% of families saw a decrease in income when a husband or wife was called to service. This combination of circumstances leaves many families struggling to find quality and affordable entertainment. MCASD hopes to help alleviate some of these obstacles by offering an affordable activity for families. ..............
