Lady Nico
Nico is an affectionate, loving dog looking for a home. Nico has the unfailing ability to brighten anyone’s day. A sweet little ball of love, he can’t wait to find a family to cherish. Nico came to us as a stray with bite wounds to his chest, and this resilient little pup has won over the hearts of our entire Veterinary Medicine department! Nico has fully recovered and loves spending time with people friends that he knows and trusts. While he can be a little shy at first, he warms up quickly. He gets along very well with other dogs and enjoys interacting with them. Tiger Breed: Pit Bull Terrier (mix)
Rusty Breed: Shepherd mix Rusty is a sweet, social and friendly love-bug looking for a new home. He likes the “great outdoors”, but also enjoys spending time with his companions inside. Rusty is an easy-going, ideal companion who loves to play and entertain his people friends. He will do well in a variety of homes but a home with children 8 years and older is recommended. His adoption fee is $105 and includes his neuter, current vaccinations, permanent microchip identification, a certificate for a free veterinary exam and more! SpaSAN DIEGO HUMANE SOCIETY & SPCA

'The Bond' by HSUS President Wayne Pacelle
2 different events, but for one distinct cause. It was 2 celebrations and book signings for Humane Society United States President Wayne Pacelle's book 'The Bond' which celebrates the magical relationship / bond between animals and humans. The first celebration took place May 3rd, 2011 at the historic Spreckels Theatre with local Jerry Cesak of San Diego's 'Jeff and Jer' show playing host. And he did it well. Hundreds of people showed up for the book signing. Among them were Sal Usman from Copy Cove, Bobbi Brink from Lions, Tigers and Bears, Ali Crumpacker who is the Director for The Fund for Animals Wildlife Center, Pam Cesak, special guest actress Wendy Malick ('Just Shoot Me,' 'Hot in Cleveland,') Lisa Fletcher, Leslie Pedersen, Simran Noon, and Jim Silveira who is the CEO of the Rancho Coastal Humane Society. Jerry Cesak, also a Board Member for HSUS had this to say. "As HSUS president Wayne Pacelle in his best-selling book "The Bond," animals cannot protect themselves from us. We have a responsibility to every animal with whom we share the earth. I was thrilled we had a sell-out crowd for a show that couldn't easily be explained other than by our tag line, "if you've ever loved an animal, come celebrate The Bond." The second event for 'The Bond' took place at the very posh Del Mar Country Club May 25th. Hosted by twins Christine Penrod and Madeleine Pickens, the evening was once again fully attended. Among the mix were Jordan of Animal Fashions by Jordan with David Masterjohn, Melanie Wizan, Alanna Tarkington, Robin Moler of HSUS, Christine Forester, Lucie Berreby and Jim Greenbaum, Chyba who is Madeleine's military rescue dog (and hero), Tommy who is Madeleine's new dachshund, and Kima the Service Dog. Guest Jim Silveira, CEO of Rancho Coastal Humane Society had this to say. "It was great to see a diversified crowd come together with a common 'bond' for animals. Christine Penrod and Madeleine Pickens have been terrific friends to animals and to the Rancho Coastal Humane Society. What a wonderful evening celebrating animals and Wayne Pacelle's book. The 3 dogs present, retired military Chyba, Tommy and Kima the Service Dog, provided well behaved exemplars of what dogs and animals can do for humans."

They were invited by the Dalai Lama’s Foundation to go to Dharmsala to meet with him and witness the change of leadership of the Tibetan Government in exile. They had dinner with the new prime minister, toured the refugee camps and various ministries. Pam Cesak explained the importance of the trip to her. "As Buddhists’ it’s kind of like a Catholic going to Rome." There were only 10 people going on this trip! .... Exciting news.
