TNT at MCASD
The night of Thursday, March 10th, 2011 took a different twist with the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego’s (MCASD) Thursday Night Thing (TNT). Showcasing the museum’s three most recently opened exhibitions, the night was dubbed a “Sensory Overload,” designed to stimulate and satisfy all five senses. Willa Kroll, Samantha Ram, Sogoal Zolghadri, Lucas Via, Chad Williams
Artist Jennifer Steinkamp filled a vast room of the museum with her colorful panoramic field of swaying trees and flowers to inspire the viewer’s sense of sight. Joan Jonas combined video, speech, and music in his exhibit to create an “open-ended narrative” for his audience to enjoy. Raúl Cordero arranged an exhibition to present his Hendrickje, an engaging series of nine related canvas oil paintings. After viewing the three featured exhibitions and before grabbing a delicious cocktail on the museum’s rooftop terrace to enjoy the incomparable view of downtown San Diego at night, guests stopped in the “sensory lounge”. The Contemporary Art Museum’s Berglund Room was converted into a scent station that featured artist Brian Goeltzenleuchter’s regional perfumes. TNT guests sampled perfumes based on their zip code to create a “scent-scape.” As guests mingled throughout the course of the night, so did the different scents, ultimately creating a collective blend unique to the region. This was a quite a testament to the avant-garde scene of the night! TNT Guests transitioned across the street to an outdoor pavilion to enjoy tasty food from MIHO Gastrotruck, cocktails, and live music from two of San Diego’s most noted alternative bands, Cuckoo Chaos and Jamuel Saxon. The environment was relaxed and enjoyable as guests reveled in ample art and activities to indulge the senses.
